Taste of Wisconsin is under way

So, summer is not complete for me until I've hit a number of fests and sampled a lot of good food. One of my favorite summer festivals is going on now in Kenosha. It's Taste of Wiscosnin, with over 40 vendors serving up a variety of good stuff. Shhh...don't tell my fellow Chicagoans, but I find it much more pleasant than Taste of Chicago. The setting is beautiful with Lake Michigan as a backdrop. There still time to head there and check it out. It started today runs Saturday form 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. See the full press release below for more.

Bakers Square's 4 Square Breakfast

I'm one of those people that could eat breakfast any time of day and when I visit Baker's Square, it's not unusual for me to order some veggie crepes for lunch or an omelet for dinner. So, on my most recent visit, when I was bringing a friend out to lunch to celebrate his 79th birthday and I spotted the 4 Square Breakfast for $7.79, it was a done deal. I knew I was getting breakfast. The trick was narrowing it down to four items out of the 30 offered.

Among the choices are eggs cooked to your liking, omelets, bacon, sausage, turkey sausage, hash browns, country potatoes, cottage cheese, oatmeal, granola, fruit, French toast, pancakes and cornbread. I opted for the biscuits and gravy, hash browns, bacon and strawberry crepes. You can opt for an additional item for just $1.10 - up to 7 items total.

There are also additional "supreme" choices - things like a caramel pecan roll or a half ham steak that can be substituted for $1.10 or added for $1.30. Pretty much any breakfast item you can think of falls somewhere on that list. It's a sweet deal and those crepes were pretty sweet, too. I'm loving these options that can be enjoyed no matter what time of day. For the full 4 Square Breakfast menu, click here.

Weber Grill and Omaha Steaks teaming up for free grilling class in Orland Park on Saturday

We use our grill TONS in the summer months. The oven has only been used once or twice since the beginning of summer and the stove top just once a week or so. Our kitchen is in our back yard this time of year. Most of our meals get prepared on the patio and while I'd like to take credit for a lot of those great grilled meals, it's often my husband who is behind the spatula. One thing he is constantly looking to perfect is his steak grilling technique. He loves a nice pink center with a nice char outside and while they are always good, he is always trying to up his game and prepare a perfect steak. So, when I mentioned to him that there was a free grilling class going on outside the Omaha Steaks in Schaumburg earlier this month, he was excited to get in on the class and get some tips from the experts.

We had seen a huge Weber trailer set up at the Naperville Ribfest over 4 of July weekend, and sure enough, it was the same one that parked outside of Omaha Steaks in the Streets of Woodfield in Chicago for this outdoor grilling lesson.

Each participant got their own Omaha Steak to grill on one of their cool compact and easily portable grills - that come in an assortment of awesome shades - and in the end they were able to taste it and see how they did.

My husband appreciated the small group setting (classes are limited to 20), so it was a fun, comfortable social event, but intimate enough to easily ask questions.

He came back quite excited and with some boxes of Omaha Steaks in hand that he had purchased at the store and was eager to put what he'd learned to use. One thing that surprised him was the high temperature used and he learned that he'd been doing that wrong. He was also surprised at how good a steak can be with a minimal amount of seasoning.

He has since prepared Omaha Steaks filet mignon on the grill and he did a great job of putting those lessons to work. The steaks were phenomenal!

The class was open to anyone, but required advanced reservations. If you're a beginner wishing to learns some grilling basics or a frequent griller looking to perfect your techniques, this is a class that will provide some guidance from those who know their stuff.

Another class is being offered this weekend in the Chicago area. At the Omaha Steaks location in Orland Park, the Weber Grill Tour will be conducting three classes. You can stop by the Omaha Steaks store to register for this free steak grilling class. The store is located at store located at the Orland Park Crossing, 14215 La Grange Road, Suite 126 in Orland Park, IL.

Class times will be:

11 a.m. - noon
1 p.m. - 2 p.m.
3 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Class size is limited to 20 participants.

Join three generations of the Buonavolanto family as they celebrate the 15th Buona location!

About Buona Restaurants
The first Buona restaurant began serving Chicago's original Italian beef in Berwyn, IL in 1981. Founded by Buonavolanto patriarch Joe Buonavolanto, Sr., the chain has expanded to fourteen locations while remaining family-owned and furthering a legacy that is equal parts family values, innovation, and adaptation. The family is defining the next-generation beef stand as a place that is the perfect blend of old-school indulgence in Chicago classics and next generation menu choices - made with a focus on fresh, scratch-made food. While the menu has expanded, the original beef recipe has not been compromised - for the three generations of Buonavolantos who are active in the company, comprise and quality are never uttered in the same breath. Buona was listed in Steve Dolinsky's Top 15 Italian Beefs in Chicagoland, and offers other Chicago classics such as the Pepper & Egg sandwich. For more information, visit Buona online at www.buona.com, like them on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter.

Locavore Farm offers first full four-course dine-on-the-land experience July 18

Twice this year I have been to a new farm in Grant Park, Illinois that I've really fallen in love with. The owners are a young couple with two young kids who simply wanted a slower pace, more real food and to share that new lifestyle with others.

That dream has evolved into "Locavore Farm" where food is grown and raised as naturally as can be and shared in events where up to 100 people gather at one very long table to slow down, savor and enjoy the company of those around them. "Evolved" is really the wrong word as it implies that it's something that happened gradually over a long period of time when, in fact, the Jones family moved into their new home less than a year ago and hit the ground running. I'm so happy to have discovered this place where you truly feel like you are a world away when you're on the grounds.

And by farm, I mean farm of the most chic kind. The attention to detail in everything from table decorations to signage to lighting is hip and creative. It's not Old McDonald old country, it's the fashionable, organic, artsy, earthy farm of the millennial.

I've sampled a couple more casual meals at the farm, which were awesome and I'm so excited about their upcoming four-course dinners that will highlight ingredients grown on their farm and other local farms. Take a peek at the menu below and go to locavorefarm.com to reserve your tickets today as seating is limited!

Tasting my way through Taste of Chicago

So, yesterday hubby and I made our way down to Grant Park for the Taste of Chicago. I hadn't been there in a few years, so I was eager to head down and see what had changed and what yummy smells, sights and tastes awaited me.

When I picked up my media pass, I got a "Find Your Taste" Tour with a diverse listing of places to sample, grouped in the following:

Classic Chicago Taste
Epicurean Taste
Sweet Tooth Taste
Taste of the Sea
World Tour Taste

So, I set out on my little foodie scavenger hunt to obtain "taste portions" from several vendors, which included booths, pop-up restaurants and food trucks. I was on a mission. I didn't want to leave until I had visited all 16. And I met my goal - well, I hit 15 and that's only because the last one was a pop-up restaurant that was there on Friday only. At several of them I tried two taste portions and I bought additional tickets to try out a few others that weren't on my list. In all, I tried 28 things before we headed out the gates. So, here's a rundown of what I tried (my favorites are in BOLD) and scroll down a little more for some delicious visuals:

Eli's Cheesecake - Booth 15
Key lime cheesecake
Original cheesecake

Gino's Steaks - Food Truck
Steak & Cheese Sandwich Mini
Chicken & Cheese Sandwich Mini

Miller's Pub - Booth 31
Pulled Pork Slider

Bruges Brothers - Food Truck

Chicago's Dog House - Booth 7
Smoked Alligator Sausage
Rattlesnake and Rabbit Sausage

Farmer's Fridge - Booth 6
Avocado Toast
Watermelon Gazpacho

Cafe Gelato - Booth 34
Lemon Sorbet
Peach Cobbler Gelato

Churro Factory - Booth 12
Churritos
Chocolate Ice Cream

Chicago Cupcake - Food Truck
Creme Brûlée Mini Cupcake
Birthday Cake Mini Cupcake

BJ's Market and Bakery - Booth 17
Mustard-Fried Catfish
Apple Crumble

Luke's Lobster - Pop-up
1/3 crab roll
Mayoless slaw

La Mexican - Booth 3
Watermelon Mini Paleta

Star of Siam - Booth 19
Pad Thai Noodles
Pot Stickers

Vee-Vee's African Restaurant - Booth 13
Red Beans & Rice with Jerk Chicken

Yum Dum - Food Truck
Crispy Rice Baowich
Kim cheesy Rice Balls

I also had to have a slice of sausage pizza from Lou Malnati's and grabbed a 1/2 of a cheezeborger from Billy Goat and a slice of Eli's original with strawberry topping for the road.

The Taste runs through Sunday. Get over there while you can and try out a ton of delicious tastes of this great city in one place. It was an incredibly beautiful day in Grant Park, too, one of the most lovely places to take in a day in Chicago.

Farmer's Fridge offering healthy flavors of summer at Taste of Chicago

Earlier this year I was at the Good Food Festival and had a chance to try out a salad from Farmer’s Fridge, a new healthy automated kiosk, serving fresh, nutrient-dense meals. I tried out the California Salad which included avocado and red grapes and a separately sealed dressing packet in a plastic jar. You simply pour in the dressing, shake and you have a fresh salad ready to eat. The one I tried was so good and I love that this option is out there. You'll find the kiosk at The Shops at North Bridge on Michigan Ave. is one of the spots you'll find Farmer's Fridge. And this weekend, you'll also find Farmer's Fridge at Taste of Chicago.

Farmer's Fridge is one of 19 new vendors to be at the annual food fest that includes 60 local restaurants and vendors offering specialties that have transformed Grant Park into a foodie's paradise. The fest runs through Sunday.

While there will no doubt me fried foods galore and fatty meats on sticks and other ooey, gooey stuff, Farmer's Fridge will have a few yummy, but healthy options highlighting some of the best fresh tastes of summer. They'll also be exhibiting their state of the art kiosks iconically wrapped in reclaimed barn wood. The food is delivered to the kiosks around the city every morning by 10 a.m. and any unsold food is donated. The Farmer’s Fridge booth will be located next to the Petrillo Music Shell along Jackson Drive. At the Taste, they'll be serving:

·         Kale Caesar Salad in a Jar: Hearty kale, crunchy romaine, funky local parmesan and hand-torn ciabatta croutons tossed in a lemon-anchovy vinaigrette all served up in a Farmer's Fridge jar. Salads will be dressed and shaken to order.

·         Watermelon Gazpacho: Bright, refreshing and subtly sweet, the Watermelon Gazpacho is finished off with a dollop of raw cashew cream for a savory contrast.

·         Avocado Toast with Pickled Radish: Extra chunky avocado piled high on a thick slice of Red Hen pumpernickel bread. Garnished with pickled radish batons for a cool kick.

Visit FarmersFridge.com for more information!
