What to eat in Santa Claus, Indiana

One of our favorite spots for a family getaway is Santa Claus, Indiana. Our first visit to the town was 18 years ago and we've made several return trips. And on those trips we've had some pretty yummy meals and treats. Here's a few tips on where and what to plan to eat when you visit Santa Claus, Indiana.

Frozen Hot Chocolate at Santa's Candy Castle

Each time we visit the Santa Claus area we have to make a stop at Santa's Candy Castle for some of their frozen hot chocolate. It's one of my very favorite beverages and I've tried to find a similar one in our area, but nothing quite measures up.

If you're up for a food challenge, theirs is called the Avalance. You have a designated time to finish a huge mug of frozen hot chocolate along with a bowl of flaming hot popcorn.

We've made several trips to Holiday World & Splashin' Safari over the years and it's such a fun place to spend time with family. Of course, after a day of running around the amusement park you work up an appetite. They've got all the expected amusement park fare and more.

Some favorites: the Goblin Cheeseburger, fudge at Mrs. Claus' Kitchen, funnel cakes, tacos at Alamo and the Hot Diggity Dog - a bacon wrapped hot dog covered in cheese and barbecue sauce. I also saw on the menu that they now have Dole Whips! I need to try that on the next visit.

Brick Oven Pizza

Chicagoans have pretty high standards when it comes to pizza and when we travel outside the Chicago area it can be hard to find good pizza. I was pleasantly surprised when we visited Brick Oven Pizza at how good it was. It's definitely passed the Chicago-pizza snob's test. Ingredients were plentiful and it was loaded with gooey cheese. This place is especially nice if you're staying at Lake Rudolph Camp Resort or Santa's Lodge and just want to hang in your room and have dinner delivered.

Breakfast Buffet at St. Nick's Restaurant

Even when we aren't staying at Santa's Lodge, we love to visit St. Nick's Restaurant in the hotel for the breakfast buffet. It's always loaded with fixing for a hearty meal to start the day and keep you going into the afternoon - especially if you have a long day at the amusement park on your itinerary.

P.S. After breakfast try out the zip line. It's pretty awesome!
