Get a Taste of "Old Oven" Pizza at Aurelio's in Homewood
One of my favorite things to do when I am in Homewood is get over to Aurelio's Pizza for a thin crust pizza made in the old oven. I first learned about this secret method from our family friend, Nola. She was my mom’s best friend from the time we were young kids and was at all our family gatherings. A few years back she mentioned that when you go to Aurelio’s, you can request that your pizza be made in the “old oven.” I’m not sure if it’s origins or when it found a home at the business, but it’s a brick oven that dates way back and has been in use for decades.
As time went on they upgraded equipment, but if you’re looking for the exact taste that you remember from childhood or from visits long ago, you can still have your pizza made this way and one bite will instantly take you back.
We lost mom in 2020, but her friend Nola still lives in the area and my twin sisters and I decided to pay her a visit recently. She suggested going out to lunch and her first pick of places was the Aurelio’s location in Homewood. When we got there, she asked for an “old oven” pizza and we all dug into our cheese, sausage, mushroom and green pepper pie with lots of sighs and moans and OMGs as we ate.
I was surprised also to learn that the Homewood location is the largest pizzeria in the world with a capacity for 650 on three levels of 16,000-square feet. The pizzeria is also celebrating its 65th anniversary this year, having started in a small storefront in downtown Homewood in 1959.
If you are looking for a taste of nostalgia along with a delicious pizza made fresh with quality ingredients, pay Aurelio’s flagship location in Homewood a visit. For more information, visit AureliosPizza.com.
