Oasis Diner: Plainfield, IN
I love a nostalgic diner. When I was a teenager we had a spot nearby called Al’s Diner. The retro diner played 50’s hits and was full of decor from that era. I loved picking out tunes on the juke box for a quarter. It was like stepping back in time.
I get a similar feeling when I visit the Oasis Diner in Plainfield, Indiana, which is just west of Indianapolis. It is like stepping back in time. The diner itself dates back to 1954 and was moved to its current location.
They serve up all the classic diner food you’d expect. I love the big juicy burgers, breaded pork tenderloin and rich milk shakes. They also make their own root beer and it is heavenly. Not only do they make homemade root beer, but they also offer a butterscotch root beer, which is even more delicious. I stopped drinking pop a few years ago, but I make an exception when I go here. I order a small thinking I’ll just have a sip or two - and then I finish it all off.
Oasis Diner is one of the 83 eateries that is included in my new book Unique Eats and Eateries of Indiana. I was down there last week to do a book signing and loved being able to spend a couple hours hanging out and soaking in the retro vibes. I’m sure you’ll love it, too. It’s impossible to not be happy in this fun diner with vinyl barstools at the counter, records hanging on the walls, fresh pies on domed plates, cheery waitresses and flowing fizzy root beer.
