Pizza Terra: Burns Harbor
On a recent girls night, I was introduced to a popular Northwest Indiana spot that is new to me - Pizza Terra in Burns Harbor, Indiana. We got there on a late afternoon on a Saturday and had to wait a bit to get in to their small dining room, but it was worth the wait. Things moved quickly and we perused the menu as we waiting, the smell of wood-fired pizza in the air.
The four of us each ordered something different from the menu and shared, enabling us to try a few different items. We started off with an amazing crostini of local peach jam, burrata, crispy prosciutto and aged balsamic. I could have eaten the whole plate and ordered more. I had heard that the crostinis are phenomenal and that you need to order all 6 of them.
We had to try a couple of the Neapolitan-style pizzas that they are known for - so we got the Terra (wild mushroom, caramelized onion, Taleggio and black truffle) and one of the specials, which had a fig jam base, fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, caramelized onion, goat cheese and Saba. Each one was delicious.
I selected the potato gnocchi, served with Roma tomato, baby arugula and a rich, pesto cream that I wanted to lick off the plate.
Another friend was excited to try the meatballs, so we also shared an order of Taleggio filled wagyu-prosciutto meatballs. They were quite delicious and served over Tuscan kale, white polenta and red sauce.
I was impressed with every bite. From first look at the outside, the menu was more upscale than I would have expected. I've passed it many times over the years traveling on US Highway 20 and it looks like the building was repurposed from maybe being an old gas station or car repair shop. Don't let the unassuming exterior steer from trying it. I'm willing to be you'll be as impressed as I was. I look forward to checking off more items from the menu on the next trip.
