Wilton’s Sweet Studio Cupcake Decorating Class
The Chicago Foodie Sisters, Carrie and Becky got to take a cupcake decorating class from Wilton! I used to go to the Wilton warehouse sale every year because it was close to my house and I have SO MANY Wilton products! I did not know when they moved their warehouse, they also moved their headquarters to Naperville, and created a new "Sweet Studio" where they hold classes. They also have kids camps in the summer and my 9 yr old is very interested! I love that they also offer Family Classes with a parent and child of any age so that my 11 yr old on the autism spectrum and I can go together, where he wouldn't probably like to go to a camp, which would be too loud and chaotic for him.
What do I love about Wilton? What's not to love? I have cookie sheets that are durable and that I've had for YEARS. I love the pans with lids because you always need a lid to keep it fresh or to bring something somewhere. They have ALL the cool sprinkles, candles, melts, every baking necessity or tools to organize and just all the fun things to decorate and bake with.. edible glitter spray, anyone? I just discovered this gem at the cupcake decorating class!
Carrie and I walked into the lobby and spotted their sign to head to the 4th floor to go to the Sweet Studio. We were checked in and given aprons and our tables each had all our supplies (which we got to take home almost all of, included in our class price) and 8 perfectly baked cupcakes! We started with a lesson on piping bags using couplers... I actually never knew what a coupler was and it is amazing- you can change the tips on the outside of the bag and not have to refill anything. Then, we practiced several different techniques (rosette, big and small, shell, lifting up and have a star with a peak, borders, ribbons, leaves and more) and asked questions and got tips from our fabulous instructor, Sandy. Then we got to color icing with gel coloring (another thing I had never used before) and try out our techniques on the cupcakes in front of us. With 10 or so other people in the class, it was fun to go around and see such different creative ideas and colors! I learned lots of little tips that I will take with me and use and teach to my kids, like using a cup to hold my piping bag and using a toothpick to get enough gel coloring to color an entire container of frosting).
We had such a fun time, laughing and trying something new. It was a great creative outlet. Carrie made a cool sunflower design on one of her cupcakes and I loved making big and small rosettes. My kids were quite impressed by the designs but I have to tell you, those cupcakes were so delicious- they looked AND tasted good! And I also was impressed with both of our designs- and that in just an evening, I could learn how to make fabulous looking cupcakes!
They told us that the founder, Dewey McKinley Wilton, taught cake decorating out of his home as the first classes held by Wilton in 1929... and here we were, learning some of his techniques so many years later. Go check out their classes and see what sounds fun to you- I don't think you can go to a Wilton class and leave anything but happy- with the service and dedication of the teacher and staff, or with what you learn or the delicious goodies you get to take home and share!
