This Small Town Pizzeria Serves Up Amazing Authentic Italian Food

Sometimes you find the best food in unexpected places. On a recent work trip to the Indianapolis area, we were heading out of town and squeezed in one last stop that was a little off the beaten path. I am glad I made a point of stopping there after a contact at the local visitor's bureau told me how good it was. He was spot on.

Perillo's Pizzeria is in the tiny town of New Salem, just a little bit outside of Indianapolis in Hendricks County. The owner is a native of Sicily and you can taste the love, knowledge and passion that goes into every slice of pizza, plate of pasta or handmade cannoli. 



We , of course, had some pizza and also sampled the meatballs that were coated in the homemade marinara and melted in your mouth. The lady at the next table told us she was having gluten-free pasta with the house-made Alfredo sauce and she raved about it.



We also got mussels, a favorite of my husband with perfect slices of garlic bread and a sauce that was phenomenal.



Garlic knots are made fresh daily and I could have eaten a whole platter of those and nothing else. It also came with a cup of the amazing marinara for dipping.



So much of the menu is made from scratch in-house - and that includes the cannoli.



Another must-try dessert is the limoncello cake. It was light, yet decadent.



They have New York, Sicilian and stuffed pizza that is just too good for words.


I love the fact that they have their own garden to supply fresh veggies and herbs for the dishes. There's an outside patio that looks like it's lovely in the warmer months.
