Chef Klaus Country Cookin': Mokena, IL

A favorite restaurant of mine in Chicago's south suburbs for many years has been Chef Klaus' Bierstube in Frankfort. My father-in-law was born and raised in Berlin and I was introduced to German cuisine through him. One of my favorite meals to this day is weiner schnitzel along with a side of German fried potatoes and red cabbage or kraut with a slice of buttered pumpernickel or dark rye and a stein of a good German lager like Hofbrau and a slice of Black Forest Cake for dessert.

We did a recent overnight in the area and were looking for a breakfast spot after checkout and I noticed that Chef Klaus also had a breakfast spot in the nearby community of Mokena. We made our way to Chef Klaus' Country Cookin' ready for a hot, hearty meal. We got exactly that and generous portions that we shared and brought home for breakfast for the next two days.

It was a typical breakfast diner of one large dining room of square tables for four with a counter and barstools, friendly waitresses and hot coffee poured before you even had your coat off. It was a cozy and inviting place that we'll definitely return to.

I was happy that some of the German specialties that I love at Chef Klaus' Bierstube were on the breakfast menu and I enjoyed some potato pancakes with applesauce and sour cream as well as eggs with schnitzel. Hubby opted for a big meaty skillet with some overeasy eggs on top. He also couldn't resist the stuffed pancakes and we each had a couple bites as dessert.

If you're looking for a breakfast or brunch spot in the south suburbs, I would definitely recommend it. You'll leave satisfied and smiling.
