Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth on This Indiana Chocolate Trail

Hi. I'm Carrie and I'm a chocoholic. That's why I was excited to learn about the Richmond-Wayne County Chocolate Trail in Eastern Indiana. A Chocolate Trail Passport is available at the Old National Road Welcome Center in Richmond that you can pick up to score chocolate samples at a dozen different locations.

On a recent trip to the area, I worked in stops at four of the participating places.

Fountain Acres
1140 Whitewater Rd.
Fountain City, IN

Stop at this Amish market to get a taste of their chocolate ice cream. There's a large selection of jarred Fountain Acres brand items, fresh baked goods, spices, mixes, meats and more along with an outdoor display of lawn chairs, flowers, lawn ornaments and other outdoor items for sale.

168 Fort Wayne Ave.
Richmond, IN

This cute ice cream shop in the Historic Depot District has homemade ice cream using locally-sourced ingredients made five gallons at a time and churned by a vintage 1928 John Deere Hit n Miss Steam Engine. They also make their own waffle bowls and cones. My favorite was the Richie Rich sundae ~ peanut butter and chocolate ice cream topped with hot fudge, creamy peanut butter, crumbled peanut butter cups and whipped cream (and we ordered it in a waffle bowl). Ullery's started out doing fairs and festivals and you'll still find them at a number of events each year. Try a sample of their chocolate ice cream with your passport.

New Paris, OH

This one is just (barely) over the border into Ohio. It's a cute gift shop with a selection of scrumptious doughnuts. We got our choice of a couple different doughnuts and I got a chocolate iced one that was amazing. We also picked up some of their apple cinnamon doughnut. You also receive 10% off one general merchandise item with your passport.

48. E. Walnut St.
Hagerstown, IN

This candy shop has been around since the 1890s and is the oldest family business in town. It was run by the Abbott family until 2013 and is now run by a couple that is carrying on the same traditions of candy making the old-fashioned way using quality ingredients. When they're in production (usually Wednesday - Friday) you can watch candy being made, including their popular caramels that are individually cut on the original machine that was used when they first opened. Get a sample of their chocolate cream on your visit.
