Rustic Road Brewery

A couple weeks ago hubby and I did an overnight to Kenosha. It's been one of my favorite places for a little getaway since our first trip there close to 20 years ago. I've actually loved Kenosha since way before that -- when I knew Kenosha only for the Mars Cheese Castle and the Brat Stop, which were mandatory stops whenever we were heading over the border for a bite to eat and some cheese and sausage to bring home.

If you're one of those people who only drives through Kenosha on the Interstate, but haven't taken time to really explore it, you're totally missing out. It's got so much beautiful lakefront space with parks and beaches with free parking allowing easy access to the water. There are also great museums - some of them free. There's outlet mall shopping nearby. There are two lighthouses. There's a lot of fun outdoor recreational opportunities. There's the Bristol Renaissance Faire. And there's a great food scene in Kenosha.

The great food scene was really reinforced on our most recent trip. We were headed to several places that would be participating in Kenosha Restaurant Week. We left early on a Wednesday and got back late on a Thursday and squeezed as much into our trip as we could. We hit seven of the nearly 40 restaurants on the list - along with a museum, some shopping and some driving near the lake for some photos.

We ate meals at 6 of the 7 places. We stopped at Rustic Road Brewing Company in between lunch and dinner on day one to try a flight. We enjoyed each of the beers we tried, from the cream ale to the Scottish Ale to the stout.

We were just too stuffed to have a bite while we were there, but the restaurant week offering sounds great - they have a number of deep fried potato boats that are paired with their beers. Visit at lunchtime to get 2 boats and beers for $10 or for dinner to get 4 boats for $20. See the full list of options here.

Kenosha Restaurant Week ends soon (it runs through February 10), but you can still get there this weekend to take advantage of the special pricing. However, even after restaurant week ends, Kenosha is a spot to definitely keep in mind for a foodie getaway. For more info on the area, go to VisitKenosha.com
